The Stupid Egg

Thursday morning Shelli had this story in the news...

"It could be an answer to the prayers of people who, quite literally, cannot boil an egg. Or at the very least, a godsend for a new generation of students struggling with the most basic of culinary tasks. Revolutionary "self-timing" eggs designed to overcome the perennial problem of how to avoid runny whites and overcooked yolks will appear on supermarket shelves in England in the coming months. The eggs are marked with "thermochromic" invisible ink, which turns dark when it reaches a certain temperature. Inks have been created to appear after three minutes to indicate a soft-boiled egg, after four minutes for medium and after seven minutes for a hard-boiled egg. The project was launched by the quality assurance scheme Lion Quality Eggs in response to thousands of people asking how to boil eggs properly."

I call this invention "The Stupid Egg".
I think if you don't know how to boil an egg you shouldn't be allowed to operate a stove.

Here are Tony's 7 Simple Steps to Egg Boiling Success!

1. Place the egg in a saucepan. (Do not drop the egg in the saucepan...the egg will crack and you will then need instructions on how to poach an egg and we're not getting into that here this morning...)
2. Run cold water into the saucepan until the water covers the egg. (If water starts coming out of the pot...the pot is full and you can turn off the tap)
3. Place the saucepan on the stove. (On a burner...It will not work if you place the pot in the middle area of the stove...)
4. Turn stove on. (Make sure the burner you turn on is the one that has the pot on it)
5. When the water comes to a boil turn burner to low. (Once again making sure that the burner you turn down is the one with the boiling pot...)
6. Let eggs simmer...2 to 3 minutes for soft-boiled eggs...10 to 15 minutes for hard-boiled eggs. (Boil for 25 minutes plus for the 'Tony-Style Egg'...
7. Remove the egg with a spoon or ladle and let it cool slowly, or run cold water over it to cool it more quickly. (Do not remove the egg with your hand...or if you do...just make sure it's not your hand you are removing it with...)
